When I think of culture, I immediately think of the diversity of society and varying backgrounds and beliefs. My own culture leads me to this perception. But it is the way that varying cultures live in society today that illustrates popular culture. Popular culture is the ideas, items, and practices that are prevalent in society today. Popular culture surrounds us and impacts all aspects of our life including business.

In business, it is not only important to focus on a quality product or service, but also on whether that product or service is in demand. A business that produced a product that was not needed or desired would surely not be in business long. Knowing how to observe and identify popular culture will allow me to better recognize client needs and represent the service provided to them.

In my spare time, I enjoy watching television. At work, I would hear my co-workers discussing the latest episodes of several reality shows. After listening for a period of time, I became intrigued with the reality show phenomenon. I decided to watch a few of these shows and quickly became obsessed. It gave me a connection to these real people whom I have never met before and likely never will.

The pop culture artifact that I have chosen is the reality show “The Bachelorette”. It is one of the many reality shows focused on finding love in popular culture. An outsider can watch the struggles and successes of a person trying to find that significant person to share their life with and relate to them on a personal level. It is an example of the human need to feel closeness and normality in mainstream culture.

  1. Looking at the blog, I am at first distracted by the multi-colored spots all over the edges of the page. They make the blog hard to concentrate on and actually absorb the information. Once I got past the spots, I read the blog on popular culture. It was informative and enlightening. The applications of how understanding popular culture can affect a business show that everyone should be concerned with popular culture whether they want to let it dominate their lives or not. The ease with which popular culture can catch people up became apparent toward the end of the blog. This shows why popular culture is “popular.”
